I have just booked up my Seatwave Reading Festival tickets and realised that the date interferes with a local election that is happening. I have waited ages to get my hands on some Reading Festival Tickets and so I do not want to give them up. However, I think that it is everyone’s earned right to vote - especially as a woman, I really think that my vote is valuable. I do not want to miss my opportunity to put forward my point of view on this important local decision. I feel so strongly about this, that I think it should be a legal requirement that every citizen should use their right to vote and I think it is disrespectful to the people who fought so hard over the years to get equal voting rights for everyone if we do not use our voting right. I have gone onto the local council website and it seems like if I register for a postal vote, I will be able to vote a week in advance and will therefore not lose my opportunity. Thank goodness for that, I can now relax and start looking at the Reading Festival lineup without any worry!

I think that democracy is a great thing and having election is obviously a part of it. However, I do find the whole campaigning process extremely dull. I would rather have one manifesto from each party with a background to my local candidate. Instead we get all sorts of paperwork which tends to just put down the policies of the other parties instead of telling us what that candidate has to offer. It can end up being very confusing and sometimes I wonder how anyone decides who to vote for. I think it ends up being down perhaps to one particular policy which may not even be put into place if they get elected anyway.

I think that elections are a very important part of the way that our country is run and that everyone should vote. I know that in some countries it is a legal requirement that all residents vote. I think this should be the case in all countries. In the past we did not have the opportunity to vote and once democracy came in, it was only the wealthy class men that could vote. It took a lot of hard work by our predecessors to get everyone the vote and so I think it is extremely important that we use it and use it wisely.
